Nail Drug Testing
Made of the same protein as hair, fingernails, and toenails are thicker and more compacted.
Drug molecules are deposited into the nail bed. Because nails grow continually in both length and width, those molecules are trapped throughout the nails as they grow and can be detected for a long period of time. Drugs can be detected in fingernails for up to six months. They can be detected in toenails for up to one year.
Nail drug testing cannot be cheated, but recent drug use cannot be detected because it takes 7 to 10 days for the molecules to be deposited. For this reason, a urine-based test may be administered to bridge the gap.

How long does a nail drug test take?
Nails used for a drug test must not have any gels or colors on them and need to be at least 2 mm long. Using a sterile collection kit, the specimen collector will ask the donor to cut all 10 of their nails under supervision. The nails are placed into a foil container, and then the tops of each nail are lightly sanded into this same container. The specimen is placed in a bag to send to the lab for analysis. The procedure should last up to 15 or 20 minutes.
